Retribution (poem)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Retribution” is a short poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

Though the mills of God grind slowly;
Yet they grind exceeding small;
Though with patience he stands waiting,
With exactness grinds he all.

He derived this from the work of Friedrich von Logau who in turn was translating a hexameter from Adversus Mathematicos (Against the Mathematicians) by the Greek sceptic philosopher, Sextus Empiricus, who was quoting an unknown poet.[1]

Its meaning is that divine retribution is slow but certain. Plutarch criticises this in his essay, On God’s Slowness to Punish.[2][3]

Breaking The Silence -Truth And Lies In The War On Terror

Uploaded on Oct 3, 2011

Award-winning journalist John Pilger investigates the discrepancies between American and British claims for the ‘war on terror’ and the facts on the ground as he finds them in Afghanistan and Washington, DC.

In 2001, as the bombs began to drop, George W. Bush promised Afghanistan “the generosity of America and its allies”. Now, the familiar old warlords are regaining power, religious fundamentalism is renewing its grip and military skirmishes continue routinely. In “liberated” Afghanistan, America has its military base and pipeline access, while the people have the warlords who are, says one woman, “in many ways worse than the Taliban”.

In Washington, Pilger conducts a series of remarkable interviews with William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, and leading Administration officials such as Douglas Feith, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, and John Bolton, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. These people, and the other architects of the Project for the New American Century, were dismissed as ‘the crazies’ by the first Bush Administration in the early 90s when they first presented their ideas for pre-emptive strikes and world domination.

Pilger also interviews presidential candidate General Wesley Clark, and former intelligence officers, all the while raising searching questions about the real motives for the ‘war on terror’. While President Bush refers to the US attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq as two ‘great victories’, Pilger asks the question – victories over whom, and for what purpose?

The Oil Factor: Behind the War on Terror

Seven Sisters (oil companies)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The “Seven Sisters” was a term coined in the 1950s by businessman Enrico Mattei, then-head of the Italian state oil company Eni, to describe the seven oil companies which formed the “Consortium for Iran” cartel and dominated the global petroleum industry from the mid-1940s to the 1970s.[1][2] The group comprised Anglo-Persian Oil Company (now BP); Gulf Oil, Standard Oil of California (SoCal) and Texaco (now Chevron); Royal Dutch Shell; and Standard Oil of New Jersey (Esso) and Standard Oil Company of New York (Socony) (now ExxonMobil).[3] [4]

Prior to the oil crisis of 1973, the members of the Seven Sisters controlled around 85% of the world’s petroleum reserves, but in recent decades the dominance of the companies and their successors has declined as a result of the increasing influence of the OPEC cartel and state-owned oil companies in emerging-market economies.[1][5]

Col. James Steele: America’s mystery man in Iraq – Full Documentary

Iraq war: 10 years on

A 15-month investigation by the Guardian and BBC Arabic reveals how retired US colonel James Steele, a veteran of American proxy wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua, played a key role in training and overseeing US-funded special police commandos who ran a network of torture centers in Iraq. Another special forces veteran, Colonel James Coffman, worked with Steele and reported directly to General David Petraeus, who had been sent into Iraq to organize the Iraqi security services.

“Hubris” (Full Film) Iraq War Documentary – Rachel Maddow (02-18-2013)

Published on Feb 18, 2013

I do not own this, all rights reserved to NBC Universal. Also, Rachel always asks for people to put her show on YouTube, so I believe I have permission to post this.

This is going to likely be a rather controversial documentary about the War in Iraq, and what is described as the false pretenses that caused our nation to enter our most unpopular war since Vietnam. I am posting this with no intention of insulting members of the military, in fact it’s the exact opposite. After watching films like this and Academy Award nominee “No End in Sight” I can’t help but be discouraged by the lack of leadership in a time of national and global crisis.
